Spend the night in a historic building

Historical Buildings to Stay in
In the Netherlands and Belgium, there are many historical buildings that have long since ceased to be used for their original purposes. Fortunately for us, these centuries-old buildings haven’t been demolished but have been preserved so that we can still enjoy them today. In recent years, many historical buildings have been transformed into hotels or B&Bs where you can stay overnight. Thanks to their history, these buildings often have a unique atmosphere that’s unlike anything else. You can also find various historical buildings on Vipio where you can stay. Below, we’ve put together a list of some of these special accommodations for you.

Staying in a Historical Building

1. Stay in a medieval tower by the harbor

In the heart of historical Veere stands a 14th-century medieval tower where you can still spend the night today. Originally built to protect the harbor and later used as a town inn—likely the oldest in the Netherlands—it is now a unique place where history, comfort, and romance come together. The charming suite on the second floor accommodates 2 to 3 people and offers everything you need for a special stay. You’ll sleep in an extra-large bed, relax in an infrared sauna, and enjoy a panoramic view of the marina and Lake Veere from the bathtub. Thanks to its location, you’ll be able to watch both the sunrise and the sunset—ideal for a romantic getaway. Check out this overnight stay

2. Staying in an old monastery

This former monastery is located on the Dutch-Belgian border and is over 100 years old. Over the years, the monastery has served various purposes. For example, at the beginning of the last century, seminarians were taught there. In the 1950s, the monastery came under the care of the Trappists, and later it became a retirement home for nuns returning from their missions. Since 2012, the monastery and the adjacent church have been converted into a hotel where one thing matters most: enjoyment! Check out this stay

3. Stay in an 1851 windmill in South Holland

Experience a unique stay in this beautiful windmill from 1851, located in the village of Arkel in South Holland. Recently converted into a charming B&B, the windmill offers stylish rooms with unique decor and modern, luxurious bathrooms. Optionally, enjoy a delicious breakfast featuring freshly baked rolls, juices, and local cheese, beautifully presented in a breakfast basket. Explore the area by visiting the iconic windmills of Kinderdijk, discover bustling Rotterdam for some shopping, or enjoy nature during a hike or bike ride in De Biesbosch National Park.

4. An Old Prison

This beautiful hotel is located in a former prison in the center of Almelo. The prison was built in 1926 and has been home to a boutique hotel for several years now. The renovation was carried out in such a way that the prison’s unique features have been preserved. With a little imagination, you can almost still picture the prisoners standing there. Sleeping in this historical prison is special in itself, but this room makes the stay truly unique. You’ll be sleeping in the prison’s old chapel. In the past, prisoners came here to pray or attend Mass. Today, it’s a luxury suite. Check out this stay

6. An Old Water Tower

There are still about 170 old water towers in the Netherlands. More than half of them are no longer used for their original purpose. This is also true of this historical water tower in Middelburg (Zeeland). Built in 1891, the water tower is a striking structure offering phenomenal views of the city and the island of Walcheren. The luxury apartment is fully equipped with all modern amenities. The best part of the accommodation, however, is the rooftop terrace on the 7th floor. This terrace is located 25 meters above ground, and enjoying a cup of coffee or a glass of wine here is truly a special experience. Check out this overnight stay
