Group accommodation in a historical windmill

This beautiful post mill, built in 1870, has not been in use for some time and has therefore recently been converted into unique group accommodation. The mill has been a protected historic monument since 1978, and you can see that in every detail: the beams, shutters, and the axle have all remained as they were. The renovation to create overnight accommodations was subtly integrated into the existing structure, rather than built on top of it. So you’ll be sleeping in a functioning piece of 19th-century engineering.

The mill is located in Belgian Limburg, about a half-hour drive from Maastricht and twenty minutes from Maaseik. The accommodation sleeps eighteen people. This group accommodation is designed for groups who want an entire building to themselves: for example, for a family weekend with three generations, a group of friends who want to cook together, or a company celebrating a birthday or anniversary.

The Mill
Sleeping in a mill is different from staying in a holiday home. The walls are thick, outside noise is blocked out, and light streams in through openings that seem to follow the sun’s path throughout the day. The octagonal gallery runs high around the building, allowing you to walk from the morning sun on one side to the evening on the other without leaving the mill. From that gallery, you can look out over the village and the flat Maasland surrounding it.

Please note: The mill is a protected historic monument. This means the stairs follow the curve of the building, and the floors become narrower as you go up.

Bedding can be booked separately or you can bring your own. All beds come standard with single-size blankets (140x200).

The Surroundings
The mill is located on the Belgian side of the Meuse Valley. This is a landscape of old gravel pits, dikes, and ferries, with bike route junctions that lead directly from the village into the countryside. Across the water lies Dutch Limburg; to the west, the Meuse Valley gives way to the forests and heathlands of the Hoge Kempen.

Cyclists are truly in their element here. Nearby, you can experience what it’s like to “Cycle Among the Mine Slurry Piles” at Terhills, where you cycle right across the water via a spectacular suspended and floating bike bridge with a view of the green mine slurry piles. When it comes to cities and charming towns, there’s a wealth to discover in the immediate vicinity. Just a few kilometers away lies Maaseik, the birthplace of the famous Van Eyck brothers, with one of Flanders’ most beautiful market squares, full of historical facades and outdoor cafes. If you cross the Meuse River into the Netherlands, you’ll be in Thorn within fifteen minutes—the iconic “White Town” known for its cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses. For those looking for a bit more energy, a rich Roman history, and a wide range of shopping options, both the historical Dutch cultural city of Maastricht and the charming Belgian town of Hasselt are just a half-hour drive away.
