Harbour crane on the IJ declared most special overnight stay of 2021

In a major online election today, a monumental harbor crane in Amsterdam was named the most special overnight stay of the year. The election was held by Vipio, the largest booking platform in the Netherlands for special stays and holidays. In total, more than 10,000 people voted for the 5 nominated accommodations at Vipio last month. An overnight stay in a life-size six-pack of beer in Castricum took second place. According to Mark Borgman, co-founder of Vipio, especially the combination of the romantic interior and the breathtaking view from the harbor crane was the deciding factor. ''We think many people voted for the crane because the overnight accommodation looks like it came out of a fairy tale book. It is therefore justified that this accommodation can call itself the most special overnight stay in the Netherlands for a year.''

Clear winner
The 50-meter-high harbor crane from 1957 received a total of 35% of the votes, making it the clear winner of the election. ''The harbor crane is especially popular with our users because of the jacuzzi found on the top floor of the crane. From this jacuzzi you have a unique view of the skyline of Amsterdam. Without a doubt, at sunset this is one of the most romantic spots in the Netherlands''. According to Borgman, several world-famous DJs, supermodels and famous artists have already slept in the crane.

Places 2 and 3
Second place during the election, with 30% of the votes, was for the life-size (beer) six-pack. This particular little building was once used as a selling point for snacks and drinks at Schiphol Airport. The owner has transformed the building into a unique place to spend the night. This accommodation is especially popular with couples who want to spend their wedding night here. Spot 3 went to a tour bus converted into overnight accommodation with 18% of the votes. The bus was used years ago the Irish band U2 for their tour of Europe. After a conversion, the bus can now be found at a campsite in North Holland and offers a unique overnight accommodation for 6 people, complete with kitchen and bathroom. The two other nominees were a historical mill from 1590 and a hidden church in the center of Amsterdam. So unfortunately they did not get enough votes to make the top 3.

According to Vipio, there is a rapidly growing interest in the Netherlands for special and unique places to stay. According to the website, this is partly due to the arrival of corona. People are increasingly choosing a unique holiday in their own country rather than a holiday abroad during this period. Owners of campsites, hotels and vacation parks are cleverly and creatively responding to this by creating more and more special places to sleep in addition to their regular stays.
