A Historic Stay in an Old Fortified Town

In the heart of the picturesque Brabant fortified town of Heusden, you’ll find this unique upstairs apartment, located in a beautiful national historic landmark dating back to 1583. Where there used to be a bustling tobacco shop, you’ll now find a nostalgic and cozy oasis for two. Downstairs in the building, the authentic 16th-century shop interior has been left completely intact, so you’ll literally be spending the night in and above a piece of tangible history. Here, you’ll feel as though you’ve truly stepped out of time, and everything slows down a notch.

The Accommodation
Through a private entrance, you’ll reach the charming upstairs apartment, where old wooden floors, historical walls, and centuries-old details blend seamlessly with modern comforts. On the first floor is the cozy yet spacious living room. Large windows offer a stunning view of the lively Fish Market and the iconic windmill. A conscious decision was made to provide a stay without a television; instead, board games and books are available for good old-fashioned cozy evenings, supported by a reliable, free Wi-Fi connection. The fully equipped, rural kitchen is located on the east side of the building. Here, you can enjoy a fresh cup of coffee in the morning in the soft, early morning light, in complete peace and quiet.

A steep, characterful staircase leads to the second floor beneath the monumental beams. Here, a regal twin bed awaits for a wonderful night’s sleep. The floor also features a modern en-suite bathroom, complete with a luxurious rain shower, a double sink, and a separate toilet. Additionally, the home features a photograph of the former owner, who worked in the shop well into her old age, which adds to the warm atmosphere of this place with a story.

The Surroundings
The fortified town of Heusden is perfect for a romantic getaway. From the front door, you can step right onto the historical ramparts for a stroll along the Meuse River, or wander through the picturesque streets lined with historical buildings, flea markets, galleries, and cozy outdoor cafes. Nature is also nearby. The surrounding river landscape invites you to go on bike rides and hikes, and the vast sandy plains and forests of De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park are just around the corner.
