Monte Argentario is a splendid promontory surrounded by the sea and connected to the coast by the Giannella tombolos and an artificial isthmus that corresponds to the Orbetello dam. It is a widespread municipality extending south of the Grosseto Maremma and has its two main centres at Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.
Argentario attracts tourists because of the uniqueness of its landscape, its marine environment and its exceptionally mild climate, making it an ideal holiday resort for much of the year.

Known as a holiday resort for its many beaches and coves, it is also a place rich in history. Known and frequented since antiquity, it has preserved some historical gems scattered throughout the territory.
Porto Santo Stefano faces the northern side of the peninsula, and is a picturesque seaside resort. The seafront promenade designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and the harbour, where one encounters the town's true maritime soul, is very popular. From here one can set off to explore the nearby island of Giglio. There is no shortage of opportunities for trekking and mountain biking. In fact, in the inner area of the promontory, there are many paths that lead from the sea up through lush Mediterranean scrub, offering views and glimpses of rare beauty. There are countless beaches and coves on the Argentario: among these is the nearby Giannella beach with fine, clear sand and surrounded by a cobalt blue sea. Beautiful, but not equipped, are Cala del Gesso and Cala Grande, perfect for relaxing off the beaten track.
In a specular position, but south of Monte Argentario, is Porto Ercole, which since 2004 has been counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Along narrow alleys, one arrives at the oldest part of the village, where one finds the Church of Sant'Erasmo, which houses the tombs of Spanish rulers. In addition to its natural beauty, Porto Ercole's charm derives from the imposing Spanish fortresses that were built in the 16th century. In Porto Ercole, the beautiful sea is also worth a visit: from the splendid Feniglia beach to the many coves that can be reached from here along the entire promontory.
An opportunity to visit this corner of paradise can be the Palio Marinaro dell'Argentario, which has been held every year at mid-August since 1937. The race between the four districts of the town evokes the territory's strong bond with the sea. A damage deposit of 1000EUR has to be paid locally for groups under 21.
