Holiday Home in Breskens

Breskens is situated in a unique location on the Zeeland coast. This is where the Westerschelde meets the North Sea, and large ocean-going vessels sail relatively close to the coast on their way to and from Antwerp. At the same time, Breskens boasts wide sandy beaches, a fishing harbor, and a marina. This combination gives the town a distinct maritime character.

This sets Breskens apart from beach towns that revolve primarily around the beach and tourism. Here, you can take a morning walk along the beach, enjoy fresh fish at the harbor, and later watch passing container ships from the shore.

With a holiday home, you also have complete freedom to plan your stay as you wish. Choose accommodations close to the beach if you’re coming mainly for the sea and sun, or stay a bit further inland if you also want to explore the polders and nature of West Zeeuws Vlaanderen.

Beach Vacation in Breskens

Breskens has a long, continuous stretch of coastline. Beaches such as 't Zandertje, 't Fort, and het Halve Maantje lie side by side and stretch along the Westerschelde. From various spots, you can look out over the water and the shipping traffic.

In the summer, you can of course swim, sunbathe, and spend long days by the sea. But the beach is also appealing outside of summer. In the spring and fall, you can take long walks there, and in the winter, you’ll experience the Zeeland coast at its most rugged.

A holiday home close to the beach gives you plenty of freedom. You don’t have to plan a single full day at the beach. Take a morning walk to the sea, go for a bike ride in the afternoon, and head back to the beach before sunset.

The Breskens Lighthouse

One of Breskens’ most famous landmarks stands a few kilometers west of the town center. The Nieuwe Sluis Lighthouse is the distinctive black-and-white tower that you can see from various spots along the coast.

The lighthouse dates back to 1868 and is the oldest surviving cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The 28.4-meter-tall tower stands on the seawall at the mouth of the Westerschelde and was part of a series of lighthouses that guided shipping between the North Sea and Antwerp.

The tower is therefore more than just a scenic photo spot. It also tells the story of Breskens’ location on one of Europe’s most important shipping routes.

A walk or bike ride from Breskens toward the lighthouse can easily be combined with a visit to the beach and the Panoramaweg.

A fishing village with its own history

Breskens has always had strong ties to fishing. You can still see this reflected in the fishing harbor and at the Fishing Museum. Here, the story of the Breskens fishermen, their boats, their catches, and life at sea is told.

The museum also features a collection of shells, corals, and fossils retrieved from the sea by fishermen. There is also a marine aquarium with various marine animals.

It is precisely this fishing history that gives Breskens a character distinct from nearby towns like Cadzand and Nieuwvliet. Anyone who books a holiday home here isn’t just staying in a seaside resort, but also in a village where the connection to the sea is still evident.

Of course, you’ll notice this in the restaurants as well. Fish, shellfish, and crustaceans feature prominently on many menus, and there are several places to eat around the harbor and in the town center.

Waterdunen Nature Reserve

Waterdunen lies directly west of Breskens. This nature reserve is interesting because it is directly connected to the Westerschelde. Saltwater flows in and out of the area through a special tidal culvert. As a result, the landscape is constantly changing under the influence of the tides.

Waterdunen consists of creeks, mudflats, sandbars, and bird islands, among other features. The area has approximately 19 kilometers of hiking trails and four bird-watching huts.

For nature lovers, Waterdunen offers an extra reason to choose Breskens. You can easily combine a morning on the beach with a walk through a completely different landscape.

It’s good to know that dogs are not allowed in Waterdunen. If you’re traveling with your dog, you’ll need to choose other parts of the coast and surrounding area for walks.

By Ferry to Vlissingen

One of the best things about Breskens is its connection to Walcheren. The Westerschelde Ferry departs from the ferry terminal for Vlissingen. This ferry service is intended for pedestrians and cyclists.

This makes it easy to spend a day on the other side of the Westerschelde during your holiday without having to take a long detour by car.

For example, bring your bike on the boat and explore Vlissingen. From the terminal, it’s about a twenty-minute walk along the Westerschelde to the city center. From Vlissingen, you can also cycle on to Middelburg or take the train.

Conversely, this connection also makes Breskens an attractive destination for cyclists who want to explore multiple parts of Zeeland during a single holiday.

Cycling along the coast to Cadzand

West Zeeuws Vlaanderen is ideal for exploring by bike. From Breskens, you can cycle almost continuously along the coast toward Groede, Nieuwvliet, and Cadzand.

A beautiful route through the area is the 39-kilometer Panorama Route. It follows a large portion of the coastal bike path and passes through Waterdunen, Cadzand, Retranchement, the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, and the Zwin, among other places. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of both the Westerschelde and the North Sea.

This allows you to explore multiple landscapes from a single holiday home. Around Breskens, the Westerschelde dominates the view, while as you head toward Cadzand, you’ll increasingly experience the North Sea coastal landscape with its dunes and nature reserves.

If you’re bringing your own bikes, be sure to look for a holiday home with enough space to store them safely.

Breskens, Nieuwvliet, or Cadzand?

Breskens, Nieuwvliet, and Cadzand are all located on the same coast but have distinctly different characters.

Breskens is the most maritime of the three. The fishing harbor, marina, ferry, and passing shipping all play an important role here. Nieuwvliet is quieter and appealing for its wide beach and the Verdronken Zwarte Polder. Cadzand has developed more strongly as a luxury seaside resort and is known, among other things, for its fine dining and its location near the Het Zwin nature reserve.

Which destination suits you best therefore depends on what you’re looking for during your holiday. If you want to combine the beach with harbors, shipping, cycling, and trips to Walcheren, then Breskens is a great choice.

Incidentally, you can easily visit all three places during the same holiday. The coastal route makes it possible to cycle from Breskens toward Nieuwvliet and Cadzand.

Holiday Home in Breskens with Children

Breskens is ideal for families who like to alternate beach days with other activities. Of course, you can spend plenty of time by the sea, but there’s plenty to do when the weather isn’t ideal for the beach.

At the Fishing Museum, for example, children can learn about fishing and life in the Westerschelde. The museum features, among other things, a marine aquarium and a collection of fossils retrieved from the sea by fishermen.

Even the ferry ride to Vlissingen can be an adventure in itself for children. Once on the other side, you can explore the city or continue your journey across Walcheren.

A holiday home also offers families more space than a hotel room. With your own kitchen and multiple bedrooms, it’s easier to adapt the pace of your holiday to suit young children.

Visiting Breskens with Your Dog

Breskens can also be a great destination for a holiday with your dog. The long stretch of coastline offers plenty of opportunities for walks together, and from the village, you can head in various directions.

However, there are rules for dogs on the beaches that may vary depending on the location and season. Be sure to check during your stay where dogs are allowed to run off-leash and where they must be kept on a leash.

Also, keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in the Waterdunen nature reserve.

If you’re specifically looking for a holiday home that allows dogs, it’s a good idea to do more than just check whether pets are welcome. For example, also see if there’s a fenced-in yard and how many dogs are allowed at the property.

Breskens Outside the High Season

Breskens is certainly not just a summer destination. It’s precisely outside of July and August that the town’s maritime character really comes to the fore.

In the spring, you can take long bike rides through West Zeeuws Vlaanderen. Fall is perfect for beach walks and exploring nature reserves like Waterdunen. In the winter, the wind, ships, and empty beaches create a completely different atmosphere.

A holiday home with a fireplace, sauna, hot tub, or jacuzzi can make your stay even more comfortable. After a long walk along the Westerschelde, you won’t need to go anywhere else.

That’s why Breskens is also perfect for a spontaneous weekend getaway outside of the traditional holidays.
