What exactly is a treehouse overnight stay in the Veluwe?

A treehouse is an accommodation space built on or against trees, several meters above the ground. It sounds adventurous, and it is, but modern treehouses are a far cry from your childhood crafts. They are designed for comfortable sleeping and lodging.

What makes a treehouse different from a regular vacation rental is the location and the experience. You are literally among the trees. This gives a sense of peace and connection with nature that you don't easily find in a regular accommodation.

The number of treehouse stays in the Veluwe region is limited. This means that the available options per accommodation can differ greatly in comfort, size and facilities. So it pays to look closely at what exactly is offered per accommodation before making your choice.

Why the Veluwe is the best place for a treehouse

The Veluwe is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. Over 100,000 hectares of forest, heathland and drifting sand, spread across Gelderland. That makes it a logical place for a treehouse overnight stay.

You're in the middle of the green without having to drive far. From the Randstad you can get there in less than an hour. From Zwolle or Arnhem even faster. And yet it feels spacious and quiet, even in high season.

The stays here are larger than almost anywhere else in the Netherlands. Besides treehouses, you will also find other nature accommodations, which makes it a good destination if you are still orienting on the type of accommodation.

Nature finishes it off. In the Veluwe, you run a good chance of seeing wild animals, from deer and foxes to wild boars. That gives a stay here a dimension you don't have anywhere else in the Netherlands by a long shot.

Basic or luxury: which type of treehouse suits you?

Treehouses vary greatly in comfort and appearance. Because the stays on the Veluwe are limited, it is extra important to know in advance what you are looking for, so that you can properly assess the available options.

Some treehouses are simply furnished and focused on the experience itself: sleeping in nature, close to the trees. Others are more comfortably equipped and offer more amenities for a relaxing stay. Exactly what is included varies from one accommodation to another and is best read in the description of the specific accommodation.

What is true with each type: a treehouse almost always has a private terrace or outdoor area. That is where you really experience the environment. The quality and location of that terrace often says as much about the accommodation as the furnishings inside.

Are you going with very young children or are you less agile? Then a treehouse is not always the smartest choice. This is because many treehouses have steep stairs. In that case, take a look at our many nature cottages so that you are not limited by this, but can still enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer.

A treehouse on the Veluwe as a romantic weekend

A treehouse is perhaps the most popular choice for a romantic getaway. It's where you sit as a couple, away from the daily hustle and bustle, in the middle of nature. No neighbors to hear you, no agenda to follow.

That makes a treehouse overnight stay in the Veluwe a logical choice for a birthday weekend, a wedding anniversary or just a moment to unwind as a couple. The stay itself is already a gift.

Of course, on Vipio you will find many more types of romantic overnight stays in the Veluwe that are perfect for a wonderful night or weekend away together.

This is what you can do during a treehouse holiday on the Veluwe

A treehouse overnight on the Veluwe is much more than just sleeping among the trees. The surrounding area offers plenty to fill your short break or holiday with - within walking distance or a short drive away.

  • Hiking and biking are the most obvious options. The Veluwe has hundreds of kilometers of marked trails, from short 5-kilometer forest routes to multi-day treks.
  • National Park De Hoge Veluwe is worth a separate mention. This is a paid-access park with its own wildlife, the Kröller-Müller Museum and vast moors and sand drifts. Plan at least half a day for this and buy tickets preferably online in advance.
  • Wildlife spotting works best in the early morning or around sunset. On the Veluwe, these are the times when deer and wild boar are most active.

Want to explore the area further? Near the Veluwe are cities like Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Harderwijk, each with its own stays for a day trip. The Veluwe Lake on the west side also offers opportunities for water sports.

What does a treehouse overnight stay in the Veluwe cost?

A treehouse overnight stay is not the cheapest option. You can quickly count on an amount between 100 and 300 euros, depending on the accommodation and period. Weekends and school vacations are more expensive than during the week or low season. Pay attention to what costs are and are not included, as this varies from one owner to another. There are almost always extra charges for bedding, towels and cleaning. You can see the exact prices at the accommodations themselves.

Treehouse or another special stay in the Veluwe

The Veluwe offers much more than just treehouses. Depending on who you bring and what you are looking for, another type of accommodation can be just as special.

Going with a large group? Most treehouses can accommodate 2 to 4 people. On the other hand, there are plenty of holiday homes and villas in the Veluwe that are suitable for large companies.

Traveling with young children? A treehouse almost always has steep stairs and many owners have a minimum age requirement. A nature cottage in the Veluwe gives you the same forest environment, without those restrictions.
