If you like hustle and bustle and beautiful buildings, Binz or Sellin are the places to be. These places are known for their wooden piers that protrude far into the sea and stately white villas. It is a protected biosphere reserve where time seems to stand a little still. You are in the right place if you like small scale and fishing traditions. Villages like Göhren and Middelhagen are connected by bike paths that lead you through the dunes and along the Bodden, the shallow bays that are so characteristic of this region. 

The style of houses on Rügen is world-famous and is called the Bäderarchitektur. These white buildings with their richly decorated balconies and large windows date back to the nineteenth century. Many of these buildings have been completely restored and now serve as vacation accommodation. Here you sleep in rooms with high ceilings and often look directly out over the Baltic Sea. This type of accommodation is unique to the region and gives you the feeling of going back to the glory days of the European aristocracy who used to spend their holidays here.

You can reach the island very easily by car via the city of Stralsund. The Rügen Bridge connects the mainland with the island and is open to all traffic free of charge. This bridge is almost three kilometers long and offers you an immediate panoramic view of the Strelasund. If you prefer to come by train, you can travel deep into the island on Deutsche Bahn's IC trains. Once on the island, the Rasender Roland is a fun way to get around. This historical steam train has been running between the different seaside towns since 1895.

Especially on the west side and near the Wittow peninsula, conditions for wind and kite surfing are ideal due to the constant wind and the shallow waters of the Bodden. You rent equipment in many places or take a lesson at one of the local schools. Sailors and kayakers also find their way here along the jagged coastline with its hidden bays. For hikers, Kap Arkona in the far north is a must. Most visitors come in the summer months between June and August when the sea water temperature is most pleasant. However, if you want to avoid the large crowds at the chalk cliffs and enjoy the autumn colors in the beech forests, September or October is an excellent choice. In spring the rapeseed blooms and colors large parts of the island bright yellow, providing a beautiful contrast to the blue sea. In winter, the island is very quiet and many museums and attractions are open on a limited basis, but this is the time for long, solitary beach walks.
